The City of Lake Forest is located 30 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop in Lake County, Illinois. Lake Forest's adjacent communities include Lake Bluff, Lincolnshire, Riverwoods and Vernon Hills.
Throughout its history Lake Forest has been referred to as "a special place" and most residents would agree with that designation. The original plan developed in 1857 for Lake Forest was designed in the "park" tradition, following the natural curves of the ravines and creating beautiful winding streets and spacious residential lots. Now encompassing approximately 17 square miles, Lake Forest's many assets include a world-class corporate center, historic business district at Market Square, and winding, gas-lit streets with elegant homes and manicured parks. Much of the community's east side was declared a national landmark in 1978 because of its character, age and beauty.
The Lake Forest Recreation Department features 423 acres of playing fields, tennis courts and wildlife areas, as well as two public recreation centers. In addition to a 133 acre, 18 hole public golf course, there are also three private golf courses.
The majority of Lake Forest elementary school students attend District #67 with six schools and enrollment of 2,010 students. Rondout District #72 serves a small portion of Lake Forest elementary students. High school students are served mainly by Lake Forest Community High School District #115 with 1,400 students. Other high schools serving small portions of Lake Forest are Libertyville District #128, Township District #113, and Adlai E. Stevenson District #125.
Commutes to Chicago are available on Metra's Chicago & North Western/North Line or the Milwaukee District/North Line commuter trains. Interstate 94 and U.S. Rte. 41 provide north-south access.

Here in the heart of the Land of Lincoln, you'll find friendly people, outstanding services and year-round fun for the whole family. Decatur is unique- big enough to offer a variety of activities, yet small enough that you will be enthusiastically welcomed by our merchants and other residents.
The city of Decatur (approx. 80,000 pop.) serves as a regional hub for health care, agriculture and commerce, and it has two outstanding institutions of higher education Millikin University and Richland Community College. Among Decatur's first residents were the family of Abraham Lincoln, who split rails at a log cabin west of town. It was here that A.E. Staley St. opened the first soybean processing plant in the United States and transformed American agriculture.
Some Decatur attractions include:
- The Decatur Celebration Central Illinois' largest free family street festival. It forms the centerpiece of a summer-long series of outdoor events that include boat races, an air show and world class live entertainment.
- Lincoln buffs will find abundant evidence of the man who earned his nickname "The Rail Splitter" right here in his first Illinois home.
- Children flock to Scovill Park, seeking out the finest concentration of attractions for young people between Chicago and St. Louis . . . a zoo, the Children's Museum of Illinois and a state of the art playground.
- Music lovers tap their toes as big bands, gospel choirs and old time piano players gather to compete from around the nation.
- And travelers have learned that Decatur's central location makes it the perfect stopover for day trips throughout the region.
